Tour starts at Iowa City

The tour starts at the University of Iowa Center for the Book and the whole tour has been organised by its Director Tim Barrett who has also run its papermaking courses and research for many years. Tim is not only an old friend but he probably knows more about making paper by traditional means than anyone else in the USA. He has spent time with Japanese papermakers and has done lot of research on mediaeval European papermaking - particularly the preparation of fibres.

Coming to America

For about 20 years up to 1987 I toured the USA nearly every year to promote our handmade papers. However the last time I visited was a brief holiday in California in 1999. I am will now be travelling from Chicago to San Francisco by car and returning by train, giving a talk at a few locations along the way. For example:

Despite the images above, the talk is not primarily about moulds although there are certainly main in the photographs I will show.

“A Personal View of Paper History: An Illustrated Talk”

This presentation will be an abridged tour of 2,000 years of papermaking from the former owner of Hayle Mill, England’s last full-scale, commercial, handmade paper mill. The presentation will include numerous Hayle Mill images dating back to the 19^th century and recollections of major Californian book projects of the late 20^th Century using Hayle Mill papers including those for the Arion Press, the Press in Tuscany Alley and the Allen Press.

Simon Barcham Green is the sixth generation of the family that ran Hayle Mill in the “Paper City,” Maidstone, Kent, from 1812 to 1987. He has a BSc in Paper Science from the University of Manchester and worked in a half-dozen machine mills before joining the family business where he introduced the first alkaline-sized, mould-made watercolor papers and hand-made papers in the world. He developed many new papers for conservation purposes and worked closely with leading private presses to produce bespoke papers including special watermarks. He has visited hundreds of paper mills in recent years providing consultancy services to many in India, Bhutan and the Philippines. He is now the Business Manager of the Institute of Conservation and a member of the British Association of Paper Historians.
